The news of the death of Mario Pineda caused shock in world football, with the 33-year-old Ecuadorian international defender being killed after a shooting attack that took place in the city of Guayaquil.
Ecuador and the entire global football community have been plunged into grief for hours, when it became known that 33-year-old defender Mario Pineda breathed his last on Wednesday (17/12) as a victim of gunfire.
As reported by SPORT24 , the tragic news of his death was announced by his team, Barcelona Sporting Club, with initial information indicating that the horrific incident took place in the city of Guayaquil when two people riding a motorcycle opened fire on him , also hitting his wife and injuring his mother.
" Barcelona Sporting Club informs, with deep sadness, that it has received official notification of the death of our footballer Mario Pineda, which occurred following an attack against him.
"This tragic news has shocked all members of the club's family, " Barcelona Sporting Club said in a post on social media.
It is noted that Pineda wore the national team jersey nine times from 2014 to 2021 , while in addition to Barcelona Sporting Club, he also played for Independiente del Valle, Fluminense and El Nacional (the latter two on loan).
